Foreword
(From the 'middle primary' Y4-6 teaching resources)
Keeping Ourselves Safe is a child protection programme which has been developed in response to an
increasing awareness amongst police, schools and the community of the need to protect children and
young people from abuse.
The Keeping Ourselves Safe programme covers children and young people from early childhood,
through primary to senior secondary levels. This means children and young people can get age
appropriate personal safety education right through their schooling. This teaching is done within a whole
school safety framework.
As with all Keeping Ourselves Safeprogrammes, Getting Help : Te Whiwhi Åwhina has a learning sequence and an integrity. Whilst there is flexibility within the programme, principals and teachers should respect this integrity so that students and young people don’t miss out on important knowledge
and competency development.
Keeping Ourselves Safe relies on a strong partnership between the principal and teaching staff and
the Police Education Oficer (PEO), working with the support of the Board of Trustees, families and
whånau, particularly in the setting up of the programme.
Keeping Ourselves Safe has been designed so that it can be maintained in a self sustained manner, with the school taking ownership for the ongoing implementation of the programme, to enable the school to create and maintain a safe environment
